Polished concrete is achieved by removing the very top layer off a concrete slab, exposing the aggregate underneath. Removal is achieved by grinding away between 1 mm and 4 mm off the surface with diamond disks. Once the desired grind is reached, the concrete can be honed and polished until the surface becomes hard and smooth, with a matt or gloss appearance.

What is Polished concrete?

Briefly, the concrete polishing technique involves:
  • Grinding the concrete down to achieve the desired amount of aggregates exposure.

  • Consolidating the concrete with a special impregnator. This process causes a chemical change with the result of a higher hardness of the floor.

  • Honing and polishing to produce a high gloss shine on the surface.

Each step in the process increases the shine and reflectivity of the polished concrete surface.

The Unique Beauty of Polished Concrete

Polished concrete is a natural, hand-finished product, meaning there will be variations in the final surface that enhance its beauty. The processes of laying, power floating, grinding, and polishing contribute to the unique shading, patinas, and texture of each piece. This is why no two polished concrete surfaces are the same, even when using the same mix. If you’re unsure about the finish you want or if your designer is unfamiliar with polished concrete, we strongly recommend exploring all options and learning as much as possible before placing your order. It's essential to be confident in your design choice before the work begins, as the final product will reflect your decisions.
